“You have delivered my soul from death, Indeed my feet from stumbling, So that I may walk before God in the light of the living.”
Psalm 56:13
Another year came and went. Sometimes the year end is a welcome shift, sometimes it feels like coming to a chasm in your path. Regardless, the season of the New Year offers a natural opportunity to assess where we’ve been and where we’re going. As believers it’s an opportunity to see the grace God has given and believe that the coming year is full of more.
In Psalm 56, David is distressed because of his human enemies. In it he asks for grace, then reflects on God’s faithfulness and compassion to him, and praises him for it. He ends the psalm with the verse above: “You have delivered my soul from death, Indeed my feet from stumbling, So that I may walk before God in the light of the living.”
Though the context of the Psalm is God’s faithfulness in spite of oppression, I think it’s a wonderful reminder to carry into our New Year, with all its relationships, endeavors, and unforeseen turns.
For our past year we can look back and ask ourselves, do we see where God has kept us from stumbling and delivered us from death? Do we see his guiding hand encouraging us here, convicting us of sin there? Graciously healing us and creating his heart in us, or allowing us to realize just how much we need his grace? These evidences of God’s grace are sometimes subtle and sometimes dramatic, but they are all proof of our adoption into the family of God through Christ and his commitment to us.
And once you’ve taken time to reflect, we pray that God will bring you with David to this conclusion: God has shown you his salvation that you may walk before God in the light of the living. God gave you grace and salvation so you could walk with him in life without shame or any need to perform.
We at WEGO wish you a happy New Year, and pray that no matter what the last 12 months looked like, you would feel the full weight of God’s faithfulness in your life. Like David says in verse 8: “You have taken account of my wanderings; Put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?”
We invite you to pray through our prayer guide below knowing each person and church on this list has their own story of how God has brought them through this year. Pray for their requests, and ask that God would fill them with faith that He is guiding the days to come.
