By Aaron White, WEGO Storyteller
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:6
It has always been my dream to be a productive person, and in the last few weeks it seemed I had arrived. Work was busy but the task list at home was shortening, and my family and I had enjoyed each other’s company in the process. All I’ve ever wanted was to look out at a few things I had made and call them good. But when I went to speak the Word, my soul was restless. When was the last time I had sat down with my Creator?
In my pride I had resisted time with him and trust in his caring and mighty hand, and the subtle anxiety began to build. I looked back over the month. The month before that, my relationship with God had felt rich and present, but recently my heart has felt stale because, in spite of all the productivity, I spent little time in the rest of the Lord. It has nothing to do with a religious act and everything to do with the reality of our relationship. We are aliens in a world not our own, living among the dead as those made alive. The ache we feel when we neglect our time with God is not purely because of guilt, but because we have not humbled ourselves to the only tether to home we have on earth—Jesus.
We can give our all every day to the point of exhaustion but we will never find any rest at the end of our labor without prayer and time in the Word, where we can know our Creator further. Ask for each person in this guide that they would rest in their time with God and trust him to provide that rest. We pray that this month as you spend time praying through the guide God refreshes your soul and gives you more trust in him and love for all the saints.
