By Zach Dodd, WEGO Director
“Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place.”
-Psalm 28:2
Who cries for mercy?
Is it the man with the plan or Mister I-can-figure-it-out-myself?
Is it the silver-spooned trust-fund baby, Miss Self-made millionaire, or the world’s strongest man?
I imagine not.
So, who cries for mercy?
It’s the one wallowing on the ground without the strength to get up.
It’s the bloodied fighter forced to admit he lost the bout.
It’s the starving peasant bowing before his king after shoplifting for bread.
It’s the person with nowhere to turn, nowhere to go, and with no other means of survival.
Crying for mercy is always a back-against-the-wall, last-ditch effort when nothing else seems to work. It’s a feeling we all know to some degree. Maybe stop reading for a moment to reflect on a time or season in your life when you felt this depth of desperation.
If you are a follower of Jesus, you know this cry for mercy is not a curse to run from; it is your very pathway to salvation. We can’t get help unless we know we need it, then ask for it. It is only with empty hands that we are able to fully take hold of the life Jesus has for us. When you come to the end of yourself, your plans, and your resources, you will find Jesus every single time.
That is one reason why, for over three decades, WEGO has sought to walk alongside communities enduring extreme hardships around the globe, where cries for mercy ring the loudest. We want to be right there offering love, care, and resources in Jesus’ name when and where it is needed most.
For this reason, we are beyond expectant to see what God is doing as we continue to expand our ministry focus in Nicaragua to a new community. Hear from Miriam, our local missionary…
“I want to share about Guadalupe’s needs. Most of the people in that community, including children and grandparents, work at the nearby dump collecting trash to make a living. They dig and sift through the garbage to find items like plastic, silver, and iron to sell. Some others are able to make money selling plantain chips. Serving there has been a blessing, and five adults have already come to Christ. We also have a monthly bible club with 60 kids. Our team’s vision is to help souls come to Christ by helping people to understand more about salvation. We also share God’s provision with them when we can. We serve a warm meal once a month to the families, and there is always a line of over a hundred people waiting for us before we arrive. Our goal is to reach out to those who haven’t come to Christ yet.”
Join us in praying for one sweet member of the Guadalupe community and two of the team members actively serving there, believing together that God hears and responds to every cry for mercy in Jesus’ name.
