Remember your childhood.
Long before kids’ faces got permanently stuck on screens, we’d roam our streets for hours until dark broke up the fun and Dad whistled us back inside. In my neighborhood, we’d play whatever sport was on TV in the cul-de-sac next to my house. We’d pick fights with each other, play cops and robbers with our patrol car bikes, and do just about whatever we could to stay outside.
Without fail, every single one of us ended our day the same way: We headed home. We all acted tough with our bloodied knees and grass stains, but the truth is, we only ever felt free to adventure because we knew where home was, and it made us feel safe.
Nowadays, we are still longing for something we can count on, a place to call home base. Something consistent, secure, and safe. And the stakes are higher than they were in our childhood. Instead of grass stains, we are covered in financial burdens, broken families, and wars that never seem to end.
So, where is our home base now? Surely, it can’t be Netflix or doom-scrolling away. Hebrews 6:19-20a paints us the most magnificent of pictures.
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.”
Yes, an anchored hope, a home base, firm and secure. That’s what we are all searching for. That word ‘forerunner’ was once used to describe a wooden rowboat that carried the anchor of a larger vessel into harbor. It would go where the big ship couldn’t to safely drop its anchor, securing the larger ship. Although the ship looked like it was out at sea, it now had a home base, anchored in safer waters.
That’s what Jesus did for all who trust in Him. He grabbed our hope like an anchor, muscled it straight into His safe harbor; then, better than a mic drop, He heaved it off His shoulders, burrowing it deep inside the soil of God’s very presence. We couldn’t get there on our own. We are just big, clunky, storm-beaten ships. But Jesus. He went before us, made a way, and gave us a home.
For the believer, your hope is securely anchored in the harbor of God’s presence now and forever. And like a child who knows where home is, you are free.
Free to live, laugh, and play outside, free to grow, roam, and adventure.
Free to finally be the child He made you to be.
And like Lyankhua in our guide, when you finally feel safe, you are free to dream.
